So many of us ache to know and see suffering, yet can be just unsure what can be done. This is where the linking process comes in - connecting need to capacity. That capacity comes in humbling, beautiful and overwhelmingly compassionate shapes and sizes. For example, Clare, builder, beautiful human being, giving up literally weeks of her time to be around the Retreat and attend to dozens of tasks awaiting her arrival and skills. Or how about Liz - Life Coach - sharing hope, wisdom, humour and a fantastic toolkit to thrive. Or how about a whole TEAM of people having the vision and drive to put together a event like Cathy's Dance, that manages both to be healing, quirky and raise a CHUNK of money to make a Care Centre happen. Or a diamond like Kelly - bringing his passion for art and music to play out in whatever way they will, for the healing of our Guests. I could go on....
Welcome to our latest newsletter. We thought you would enjoy this beautiful picture taken on site recently - a beautiful rainbow seems such a strong symbol of hope, hope for better times ahead.
It has been such a busy but extremely productive time here at the Retreat - traditional for Spring of course - and we are just catching our breath! Everything has sprung into action and started growing with a vengeance ;) We are fortunate to have some great volunteers who help us keep the site under control and looking beautiful.
Our Gala Dinner Fundraiser in September was a wonderful occasion. Jackie Clarke was superb as our entertainer and everyone had a great evening. We are so thankful to BDO who were our sponsors for the event and theNovotelwho were an amazing team to work with and so generous with their advice, time and encouragement.
Our other major event this season was the incredible Cathy's Dance, where we invited people to join us for a amazing evening of entertainment followed by an hour of dancing in the dark. There was a terrfic atmosphere amongst the hundreds who attended, we danced to remember, we danced to forget, we dance to be who we are and we danced for hope. We are so grateful to all the sponsors who helped make Cathy's Dance a success - the list shows you have amazing our local community is! Roofing Taranaki, Roofing Industries, TSH, About Image, Hall of Design, Stewart Family Trust, Virginia Winder, TSB Stadium, South Coast Construction, Giggle Taranaki, Liquigas, 45, Screen Culture, NP Underwarer, Medicross, Insure Taranaki and TDM.
The Retreat continues to receive many calls or inquiries every day, we know we are offering something much needed in our community. As much as we are there for our community, our community has shown how much it here for us!. We were thrilled when NPDC recently agreed to a 5 year funding package to help cover some of our wage costs - such longterm support is vital to our sustanability. We are also often blessed with gifts in kind as well. Some months ago we were given an awesome children's playground; Rowan Cole the developer donated it, Kelly from Wills Contracting removed and delivered it and Hayman QS Ltd, just made it happen. It sat in our driveway for some time while we tried to figure out the best way forward. Joe Corlett (best fencer in the world West) came to our rescue with Marta and some of his crew. They cut it down, dropped the lodge fence, moved it with a tractor (thanks farmer Richard!), installed it and put the fence back up! Guests staying that week very much enjoyed cleaning and painting it up! Check out the transformation!
Update from our Retreat Co-Ordinator : Connector-uppers in our community are wonderful things. They are like the wiring links in a circuit - or that crucial joiner of bits of down-pipe that allows the flow to make it from point A to point B! The more we see it in operation, the more we understand that the Retreat is another one of those - a connector-upper. The pieces of pipe on either side of it are of equal importance and value. Neither one is superior to the other. We acknowledge that every one of us is sometimes on the giving side, and sometimes on the receiving end. The connecting up is between those of us in need of some support, right here/right now - and those who have time, capacity and passion to provide that.
We know, my friends, that there is sometimes overwhelming need; a slice of my week is set aside for tears of sorrow and an equal portion, it seems, for tears of hope. Don't hesitate to offer your link in this circuit; your kete - we need you; value you; welcome your skillset - but most of all - all that you are. Likewise, know that there is capacity there for the situation you are facing to be acknowledged and connected up. We're here for you.
